Discover flowers and herbs

Lisa Engler – the "herb lady" of Bettmeralp

Dar-Vida rolls topped with yarrow butter or herbal curd cheese served as an amuse bouche. Or they may also be dipped in sorrel stems or willow-herb stems. The actual appetizer consists of fried elderflowers and a stinging nettle soup. Patties that are generously seasoned with thyme, plantain, stinging nettles and Good King Henry make up the main course. A compote made of sorrel stalks served with custard and wild strawberries rounds off the "Spring time in the Alps" meal.

If you take a walk around Bettmeralp with Lisa Engler you are sure to have a great experience. According to Lisa's philosophy, eating is not just about the food. Eating is a pleasurable experience, an adventure, a delight to the palate and a pleasure for the senses at the same time. Convenience food or packet soups are taboo for Lisa, a native of Basel with roots in Appenzell. "The only things I serve are what I have planted myself or what I am able to collect outside my door," she says. Ingredients for her extraordinary dishes are available in great quantities from spring to autumn. The unique landscape of the Aletsch area with its wide variety of flowers and herbs is Lisa Engler's supermarket and her work place all at once.
